Good Gardening Starts with Talking to Yourself

Over a background of bright magenta flowers with yellow centers, a brown-bag style speech bubble with black text reads “good gardening starts with talking to yourself.”

I talk to myself.

Outdoors. Where other people (and plants) can hear me.

Audibly.

If you're looking to get gardening in the coming months, you should too. Here's why.

You are your own garden design client. Before I ever help a client design, build, and care for an edible garden (my books are open for 2023 right here), I often do not one, but TWO client interviews.

And if I'm my own client, I do them with myself.

Preferably while wandering around the space I'm going to be gardening in, so that that land, those plants, that air and water, are also part of the conversation (and part of my perception as I'm imagining and articulating what I want).

I want to chat with my client casually, and then deeply, about what they need, what they long for, what lights them up, what's hard or inaccessible, how they use the space now, how they're longing to use it, what their daily routines are, what their ideads and favorite colors and plants and styles of garden are. What they DON'T like. How involved they want to be.

So go ahead. Get designing your 2023 garden. It all starts with talking to yourself. With curiosity, excitement, and might I suggest, at least a little bit of garden geekery.

Still lost as to where to start, or where to go next? My pre-recorded "Out of the Garden Shed" and "Intro to Permaculture" classes are here for you - and they go on SALE FOR THE HOLIDAYS in just a few days right here at rachelconomy.com <3
